The Charlottesville Guide from an International Student Perspective
Shopping
Groceries
For regular everyday groceries, you have a choice of stores in Cville - Three Krogers, atleast two Food Lions, Giant and
Harris Teeter. If youre a first time grocery shopper, you need to know that each store offers a discount card
(Kroger - Kroger Plus, Harris Teeter - VIC, Giant - Bonus Card, Food Lion - MVP)
which is free - you get it by filling a form. Harris Teeter has a 5% discount for students and Kroger has a 5% discount for
all UVa employees. If you don't have a car, the blue route goes to Barracks - there's Harris Teeter and one of the Krogers at Barracks
Charlottesville has an new Indian grocery store - Indian Bazar at the corner of 29N and Rio (next to Papa Johns).
Now no need for Quic-pic, behind KFC on 29 which was small and
many times out of stock for most things. Other places for Indian groceries are Integral Yoga (Preston Ave. in downtown) and
Foods of All Nations (Near Pizza Hut on Ivy) and Giant, which now keeps almost all commonly needed Indian groceries except fresh veggies.
The subway at the corner of JPA and Fontaine also keeps some Indian frozen and ready-to-eat foods. Asian Market, next to Ming Dynasty on 29, keeps
some fresh veggies that are not available at the major grocery stores.
A secret for chapati eaters - try the Honey Wheat Tortillas (I haven't seen them lately though) available
at Harris Teeter, which Parchayi discovered.
Discount Branded Stuff
A strange thing about American stores in general is that they always have a Sale. It's sometimes difficult to
make out the difference between the regular sales and sale sales, but as such you can buy branded stuff for not too
much more than Walmart prices if you shop smartly.
Then there are discount branded stores. Cville has three of them that I know of - Marshalls at Seminole Square and TJ Maxx and Rugged Wearhouse in
Rio Hill.
Sams Club
Sams Club is a membership wholesale store and deserves to have its own section on this page. It costs 35$ per year membership
for 2 people and thats not much considering the cheap price-tags on everything. Basically you get everything from electronics,
home equipment, super size groceries (you'll see what I mean by super size when you visit Sams) to clothes, books and gas.
Its difficult to find things at those prices anywhere else including cheap online stores.
