The Charlottesville Guide from an International Student Perspective

Movies and Books

Charlottesville has three theaters (Regal Downtown, Regal Seminole and Carmike) for mainstream movies, not counting the University's own and one theater (Vinegar Hill) for the non-mainstream ones. Charlottesville also has a discount theater (Jefferson at the Downtown mall). You can get information about these (except the university theater) by calling 817-FILM. Or you can also visit Cvillemovies. For other events and happenings around Cville, visit University Programs Council. My Advice: Dont miss the hypnosis show at the begining of every Fall semester. I've seen it three times and will see it again this year.

The University Library (Robertson Media Center at Clemons) has a huge collection of movies including over 900 Hindi movies, which you can borrow for free or view at the library itself. The library has lots of TVs with headphones and some small rooms where you can see movies in a group. The library also used to buy movies that people recommended (for example they bought Tekken and 'Incredibly Stange Creatures that Stopped Living and became Mixed up Zombies' at my recommendation).

If you are a big movie buff like me, I'd suggest you join Blockbusters rewards program. It costs 10 bucks a year which you can easily recover in a few rentals. There are four Blockbuster locations in charlottesville and all of them have slightly different collections. If you run out of things to see at blockbuster check out Netflix and DesiCompany. (I've not tried either)

As far as books go, it's not easy to find something that the library (or libraries to be more accurate) doesnt have (course related or otherwise). If you do find something, the library can borrow it for you from other libraries via an inter-library loan or even buy it for you if it is required for a course.

Charlottesville also has a number of used book stores and cville-people (cvillians? cvillers?) seem to have a taste for mystery, considering that mystery generally has a separate aisle of its own, often as large as the rest of the fiction aisle. There are three or four used book stores at the downtown mall, one on the corner (Near Martha's Cafe) and theres atleast one on 29, near Staples. The Salvation Army thrift shop is another great place to buy used fiction really cheap. Annualy (sometime in spring) there is a huge booksale and I've built up quite a collection thanks to that.
