The Charlottesville Guide from an International Student Perspective
Food
Charlottesville, for its size, has a surprsingly varied choice of cuisine, which you will notice in your first few weeks here.
But those are only a smattering compared to what you will find if you open the Yellow Pages. The most popular foods
amongst desis are probably Mexican, Thai and Chinese. My personal favorite Mexican place is Amigos, at the corner.
My favorite food in Charlottesvile is the Mongolian BBQ grill at China King followed closely by Pad King Thai at
Thai 99 on JPA and in Albemarle square. Other cuisines to try in Cville are Italian, Vietnamese, Korean, Brazilian,
Japanese, Mediterranean and of course Indian. I'd also recommend a drive to
Adams Morgan in DC to try out some
Ethiopian.
I'm a vegetarian and have had no problems finding vegetarian food in Charlottesville - there is generally something
vegetarian in every restaurant and many things vegetarian in most restaurants. If you're vegetarian and don't want to miss
out on the taste and feel of non-veg try Ming Dynasty's veggie meats. Burger King and the Hospital cafetaria
serve Veggie Burger's. Subway has a secret unadvertised veggie sub called the Veggie Max - the only veggie sub with a pattie.
Eating lunch out is generally cheaper than dinner. Most places have a special Lunch menu or a cheap Lunch buffet.
A few restaurants such as Taiwan Garden (Ivy Road) and Panda Garden (on 29) have dinner specials too.
