The Charlottesville Guide from an International Student Perspective
University
After living here since 2000 and going through everything that international students go through,
I have decided to write this guide for the uninitiated. I am no longer a student, but I'm hoping this will
help newcomers. Yes, this is also a ploy to increase the hits
to my website. Any comments welcome.
When you are accepted for admission to UVA, you will receive a big packet with everything you wish to
know about UVA and all about how to get around here, finding aprtments, maps etc. You will also receive a postcard
which you need to mail back regarding having a 'host family' here. I have spent many American festivals and
occasions with my host family and I'd recommend you fill that one out (most of
my friends here didn't - don't miss out on that opportunity).
Another way to get introduced to American culture and make some friends having diverse interests is the
Language
Partner Program. If you are from a country where the native language is not English, you are required to take English
tests (similar to the TOEFL and TSE). When you do so, you will receive information about having a language partner, who
is basically someone you can hang out with, meet new people and make new friends, which I did thanks to Christine, my
language partner.
If you are from a country like India or China, which represent a significant population, there is bound to be a student
association for your community. The Indian Student Association (ISA)
organises many events and they will keep you informed with regular emails to an indian mailing list - desis@virginia.edu.
To contact Indian students, thats the place to email.
For more information about getting around in Charlottesville and about Indian students visit
this site.
The International Center, another important resource for international visitors
organises events such as First Fridays (on the first friday of every month), an evening where students
present their countries culture. Another student organisation of interest and help is International
Students in Charlottesville.
I have joined the Indian Association of Charlottesville and met a few members. There are no student members yet, just Indian families who live in Charlottesville.
The Indian Association organizes various Indian events, festivals and general get-togethers. For more information, contact me and I will put you in touch with the right people to join.
