Booking travel to India is extremely expensive on the regular travel sites like Cheaptickets, Travelocity etc.
However there are several travel agents specializing in cheap tickets to India. Here are some of them that I have used and others I know about
Most of the travel agents to India will ask you to fax copies of your credit card information. Some travel agents charge extra fees for credit cards.
Travel Agencies for booking Tickets to India
Alanita Travel (NY) (617 254 8045) - Used Once. They are amongst the few agents who have fares
listed on their website, though you may not always get those fares.
Krisbi Travel - Used Once (NY Branch - 212 921 0023). They have offices in several US metros and each one is independent and will offer you different fares.
World Wide Travel Used once and plan on using again (DC Branch) (800 343 0038, 888 800 1202) - Used Once. I would recommend them - extremely helpful when the airlines messed up my flights.
AP Travels (MD) (973-443-9472) - Used Once.

Trip Explorer (NJ) (866 Trip Exp)- Can search for fares online. Has additional fees for paper tickets.
Aakash Travel (CA) (866 946 3421) - Has some deals posted online
